Honda relocates parts of its vehicle production from Great Britain to Japan
The automaker plans to close its plant in Swindon, southern England, in 2021 and to transfer production of the Civic model to the Yorii plant in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The decision to close the plant is based on declining Honda sales in Europe and the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. For the Japanese market, the Civic will be produced in Yorii from 2021. The Swindon plant has also served the North American market. Honda has already decided to produce the Civic there in the future.
With regard to the general strategy for the production location in Great Britain, the company is waiting for the details of a trade agreement between Japan and Great Britain to become known before making its decision. Among other things, Honda hopes to see the lifting of import tariffs on new vehicles. Other Japanese car manufacturers have also brought their foreign production back to Japan. Nissan, for example, has announced that the next generation of the SUV X-Trail will be manufactured at its plant in Kyushu in southwestern Japan, rather than in the UK.
