Japan Announces New and Revised JIS Standards for 2026
13. August 2026Japan has announced a new set of JIS standards covering testing methods for iron ores and requirements for laboratory reagents. Publicly notified on July 21, 2026, the update includes newly established and revised Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) relevant to manufacturers, laboratories, suppliers, and other organizations operating in the Japanese market.
The announcement covers four newly established standards for determining copper and tin content in iron ores, as well as three revised standards addressing magnesium sulfate heptahydrate and analytical methods for iron ores. The standards were prepared through accredited standards development organizations, with the International Standardization Division responsible for the relevant areas. Products subject to Japanese Industrial Standards usually require applicable JIS certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Japan.

New JIS Standards for Iron Ore Testing
Four newly established JIS standards concern analytical methods used to determine the composition of iron ores. JIS M8218-1 specifies a 2,2’-biquinoline spectrophotometric method for determining copper, while JIS M8218-2 addresses copper determination using flame atomic absorption spectrometry.
The notification also introduces JIS M8227-1 and JIS M8227-2. The former covers a phenylfluorone spectrophotometric method following iodide extraction, while the latter specifies a flame atomic absorption spectrometric method after iodide extraction for determining tin.
These standards were prepared by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation as an accredited standards development organization. The new requirements provide standardized analytical procedures that can support consistent assessment of iron ore characteristics within the Japanese industrial standards framework.
Revised JIS Requirements Affect Laboratories and Industry
Three existing Japanese Industrial Standards have also been revised. JIS K8995 covers magnesium sulfate heptahydrate used as a reagent and was prepared by the Japanese Standards Association.
For iron ores, JIS M8229 has been revised with respect to determining lead through flame atomic absorption spectrometry following the separation of iron. JIS M8717, which specifies the determination of iron ore density, has also been updated. Both revisions were prepared by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation.
Manufacturers, suppliers, testing laboratories, importers, and exporters dealing with relevant materials should determine whether the revised Japanese Industrial Standards affect their testing procedures, technical documentation, or conformity assessment activities. Where JIS requirements apply, organizations may need to review existing procedures against the latest editions to support continued compliance and market access in Japan.
