Japan Highlights Automation Potential for Vertical Farming Components

9. July 2026

Japan’s focus on PSE certification and advanced agricultural technologies continues to expand as the country supports the development of innovative controlled-environment farming systems. The opening of the world’s first fully sealed vertical-farming facility in Tokyo underscores growing interest in automation, energy efficiency, and high-performance electrical components used in agricultural equipment.

Developed by Tokyo-based agritech company Plantx, the new pilot facility in Koto Ward consists of multiple fully sealed cultivation modules stacked vertically. Each module independently controls environmental factors such as lighting, air circulation, water supply, temperature, and humidity, enabling highly precise cultivation conditions. According to the company, this modular design differs from conventional vertical-farming facilities by allowing individual environmental management within each sealed unit. Electrical and electronic components usually require PSE certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Japan.

Advanced Control Systems Drive Agricultural Innovation

The facility is designed to optimize the nutritional value and sugar content of vegetables and fruits through precise environmental control. Independent regulation of light, water, and air within each cultivation module supports consistent production while offering opportunities to improve crop quality.

During the opening ceremony, Japan’s agriculture minister described the technology as an important development for the future of agriculture. Plantx also announced plans to use the pilot facility to evaluate automated cultivation technologies aimed at reducing labor requirements while lowering electricity, water, and fertilizer consumption. Such developments highlight the increasing importance of reliable electrical equipment, sensors, controllers, power supplies, and other system components that may be subject to applicable Japanese safety requirements, including PSE certification where relevant.

Government Support Strengthens AgriTech Development

Japan has identified food technology, including vertical farming, as one of its strategic investment priorities. As part of this initiative, the government has awarded Plantx a grant of approximately ¥1.2 billion to support continued research and technology development.

For manufacturers and suppliers of components intended for advanced agricultural systems, the project illustrates the growing demand for automation technologies capable of meeting Japan’s regulatory and safety expectations. Depending on the specific product category, electrical equipment placed on the Japanese market may require compliance with the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act and the applicable PSE conformity assessment procedures, while certain industrial products may instead fall under relevant Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) and associated JIS Mark certification requirements.

As Japan continues investing in next-generation agricultural infrastructure, suppliers of compliant electrical and industrial components may find increasing opportunities within the country’s expanding controlled-environment agriculture sector. Further regulatory information may be available through official certification bodies and regulatory news resources.
