Japanese automakers focus on Chinese market
The Chinese economy has recovered faster than expected from the effects of the global coronavirus outbreak. This is also reflected in the recently increasing sales figures for new vehicles. Leading car manufacturers are therefore focusing on the Chinese market and want to sell their vehicles there. At the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, which took place at the end of September, manufacturers presented a range of SUVs and electric vehicles for the Chinese market. Among others, the Honda SUV e:concept celebrated its premiere at the exhibition. Developed independently at Honda’s research center in Guangzhou, China, the new electric vehicle leads the model strategy for the Chinese market. Honda also plans to produce the vehicle in China and export it worldwide.
Nissan CEO Uchida participated via video conference in the presentation of seven new models for the Chinese market. The vehicles are scheduled to be launched by 2022. The Chairman of Volkswagen China also sees potential for his brand in the local automotive market. The Volkswagen Group’s global sales currently amount to around 45 percent for China, with Nissan achieving 60 percent in April and 30 percent in July. According to the Association of Chinese Automobile Manufacturers, sales of new vehicles slumped by 79 percent in February due to the corona virus. However, numerous government incentives have had an effect, and sales figures were back in the double digits as early as May. Developments in China contrast sharply with the markets in Japan, the USA and Europe, where the recovery is progressing only slowly.
In February and March of this year, when the outbreak of the corona virus in China was at its peak, car manufacturers around the world were affected by delayed deliveries and production downtimes by Chinese suppliers. After the situation in China had recovered and in view of the sharp rise in sales figures, many automobile groups have resumed or even increased their involvement in the Chinese market.
