Mazda-Toyota invests $830 million in Alabama plant, USA
Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, the recently formed joint venture between the two automakers, has announced an additional $830 million investment in its new plant in Alabama, in the southeastern United States. The state governor, Kay Ivey, said the total investment in the new plant now amounts to $2.3 billion. Originally planned was an investment of 1.6 billion US dollars. The additional funds are to be used for modern production technology and training of the up to 4,000 workers.
The production facility is currently under construction, but 600 employees have already been contracted. Mark Brazeal, vice president of administration at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, said the company is preparing to start production next year and hopes to establish a good, long-term relationship with the new employees and provide them with employment for many years to come.
In 2018, the two Japanese automakers had chosen Huntsville, Alabama, as the site for their new, giant factory. At full capacity, up to 300,000 vehicles per year can roll off the production line there. The capacities are divided equally between a new Toyota SUV model and a Mazda crossover SUV, which has not yet been presented. Initially, it was planned to produce the Toyota Corolla at the plant, but the company has since changed its plans. Several US states had applied for the location of the new project. The decision in favor of Alabama was made because of a combination of lucrative subsidies, a favorable workforce and an attractive environment for large companies.
