Mitbubishi Electric begins testing local 5G network in Japan
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan recently announced that its Nagoya site in Aichi Prefecture has begun testing and trialing a local 5G system. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) granted the license for a local area and on a different frequency band (28.2-28.3 GHz) than the frequencies already used by other operators. According to Mitsubishi, the local 5G network is expected to provide new services and applications for the automation of production facilities and other industries in the future.
The test will demonstrate wireless data transmission between 5G base stations and Mitsubishi’s automation technology. Other applications such as remote diagnosis, remote maintenance and virtual systems such as VR and AR will also be tested. 5G technology achieves extremely high transmission speeds and low latency as well as a large number of simultaneously connected devices. It is intended to use the existing infrastructure on frequency bands for which telecommunications providers already have licenses. Since December 2019, the Ministry of the Interior and Communications (MIC) has been accepting applications for the testing of local 5G networks in order to provide local administrations and companies with faster and more powerful communications, particularly in view of the increasing spread of Internet of Things or IoT devices.
