Murata Launches UWB High-Precision Positioning System for Japan’s Factory and Logistics Sector

23. July 2026

Murata Manufacturing has announced the launch of a high-precision positioning system based on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for factory and logistics applications in Japan. The solution is designed to support the ongoing digital transformation of industrial facilities by enabling accurate tracking of workers and assets in challenging indoor environments. Factory and logistics positioning systems typically require (TELEC) Certification for Radio Equipment in order to be approved for import and sale in Japan.

High-Accuracy Indoor Positioning with UWB Technology

Manufacturers and logistics operators are increasingly adopting digital technologies to improve productivity, optimize workflows, and address labor shortages. However, achieving reliable indoor positioning has remained a challenge due to the presence of metal machinery, storage racks, and other obstacles that can interfere with conventional positioning technologies.

Murata’s new system utilizes UWB technology together with newly developed dedicated antennas to minimize the impact of receiver installation angles on positioning accuracy. According to the company, the system can achieve positioning accuracy with an error of less than one meter, even in environments with significant physical obstructions. The antenna design also simplifies system installation and reduces engineering effort during deployment.

The solution has already been deployed within Murata’s own manufacturing facilities, where more than 100 receivers are operating to monitor worker movement and improve operational efficiency. This practical implementation demonstrates the system’s suitability for large-scale industrial environments.

Regulatory Considerations for Market Access

As UWB technology operates within regulated radio frequency bands, manufacturers and importers intending to place similar wireless positioning equipment on the Japanese market should verify the applicable telecommunications and radio regulatory requirements. Compliance with the relevant tele certification requirements is an important step in demonstrating conformity before products can be imported and marketed in Japan.

The introduction of advanced UWB positioning solutions reflects the growing demand for digital technologies that enhance productivity, improve asset visibility, and support automation across factories and logistics facilities. Murata stated that it will continue developing solutions that contribute to the digital transformation of industrial operations while supporting higher productivity and more efficient workforce utilization. Additional regulatory information may be available through relevant certification resources and official regulatory announcements.
