PSE/PSC Certification Process

What are the steps for obtaining a PSE approval and PSC approval?

There is a wide range of products groups that need to apply for a PSE approval or PSC approval in Japan. Even though the process might slightly differ from product to product the core process can be described as follows:

  1. Preparation and review of application documents
  2. Submission of application to the Japanese authority
  3. Conformity assessment including product testing and on-site factory inspection
  4. Issue of statement of conformity
  5. Marking and labeling of the product(s)

How must the product be marked after obtaining a PSE approval?

The PSE or PSC mark must be applied in accordance with the Enforcement Rules of the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law, Article 17, and Appendix Tables 5, 6 and 7 of the Enforcement Rules of Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law, Article 17.

For long-term use consumer products, it is important that the standard period of use, the recommended frequency of inspections, and the contact information of the manufacturer are shown on the marking.

For some electronic products manufacturers and importers are required to put warnings on the product regarding product deterioration over time and the standard period of use in relation to product design.
