Entertainment Strengthens Japan Electronics Market
6. August 2026Sony Group has raised its annual profit forecast following stronger-than-expected earnings driven by its entertainment businesses, highlighting the resilience of the Japanese technology group despite ongoing cost pressures in hardware manufacturing. The performance also reflects the importance of maintaining compliance with PSE certification, the primary mandatory product safety approval for many electrical and electronic products entering the Japanese market. Sony’s improved outlook demonstrates how diversified revenue streams can help manufacturers navigate supply chain challenges while continuing to invest in consumer electronics and innovation.
The company now expects annual operating profit of ¥1.72 trillion, an increase from its previous forecast of ¥1.6 trillion, after quarterly operating profit climbed 40% year over year. Currency effects from the weaker yen and refunds related to previous U.S. tariffs also contributed to improved financial results, particularly within Sony’s gaming division. Electronic products usually require PSE certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Japan.

Entertainment Growth Offsets Hardware Challenges
Sony’s latest financial results underline the growing strategic importance of its entertainment portfolio, including music, gaming, films and anime. Strong growth in music revenue significantly outpaced the games business, while popular intellectual property and expanding streaming services continued to support earnings.
At the same time, the company continues to face challenges within its hardware operations. Rising memory prices have increased pressure on PlayStation 5 margins, while image sensor demand remains affected by slower smartphone sales. Nevertheless, upcoming game releases and continued investment in AI-powered production technologies are expected to strengthen Sony’s long-term ecosystem across both content and devices.
The company has also continued reshaping its consumer electronics business by concentrating on higher-value segments. Its recently announced non-binding proposal to acquire lens manufacturer Tamron would further expand Sony’s camera portfolio and strengthen its position in the imaging market.
Regulatory Considerations for Electronic Products in Japan
For manufacturers exporting electronic products to Japan, product compliance remains a fundamental requirement regardless of market conditions. PSE (Product Safety Electrical Appliance & Material Certification) is the mandatory certification for many electrical products covered by Japan’s Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law. Depending on the product category, certification may require laboratory testing, product evaluation, factory inspections for specified products, and application of the appropriate PSE marking before products can be imported or sold. Some products incorporating wireless functions may additionally require TELEC certification, while certain IT equipment may also pursue the voluntary VCCI mark for electromagnetic compatibility.
As companies continue investing in advanced consumer electronics, gaming platforms and imaging technologies, maintaining compliance with Japan’s evolving certification framework remains essential for uninterrupted market access and regulatory conformity.
