PSE/PSC

The PSE Mark is a mandatory safety and EMC approval for electrical products sold on the Japanese market. PSC certification is a mandatory consumer products safety approval that applies to nearly all consumer products sold in Japan.

Radio/Telecommunication

The Telecommunication and Radio Certification for Japan is the approval needed for wireless radio and telecommunication equipment in Japan and covers all products which utilize the radio spectrum and operate under 3 THz.

JIS Certification

The JIS Mark is a mandatory certification based on product certification that verifies the conformity of products according to the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). JIS covers industrial and mineral products, data, services and management systems under the Industrial Standardization Act of Japan.

VCCI Mark Certification

The VCCI Mark is a voluntary certification for IT equipment in Japan and a well-regarded indicator for high quality standards. Only members of the VCCI council can apply for this certification.

Japan RoHS

Manufactures and Importers of certain types of products for the Japanese market are required to make sure their products are in compliance with the Japan RoHS Law for Promotion of Effective Utilization of Resources in Japan and the compulsory Industry Standard JIS C 0950.

Subaru selects Xilinx as chip supplier for driver assistance systems

Subaru recently announced that the computer chips of the US company Xilinx Inc. based in Silicon Valley will be used for driver assistance systems for semi-autonomous driving, including during slow movement in traffic jams. Both companies said at a press conference that the technology will be used in Subaru’s new Levorg mid-size sedan and will consist of Xilinx’s Zync computer chips and a new version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system, among other things.

The system uses two cameras to generate a spatial image of the road and combines this data with radar sensors mounted around the vehicle. Unlike other manufacturers who use expensive laser sensors or LIDAR, Subaru relies on the low-cost radar sensors. The CPUs of Xilinx process the image data of the cameras and in combination with the assistance system can slow down the vehicle before a curve. In addition, the system enables autonomous driving in traffic jams at speeds of less than 50 km/h as an option. However, this function is only available in Japan and requires a prior download of detailed road maps. During hands-free driving, the driver must continue to look ahead. This is monitored by sensors and cameras inside the vehicle.

Subaru plans to add new features to the system over time. Therefore the decision was made to use Xilinx computer chips, a Subaru spokesperson said. Their CPUs are so-called programmable chips, in which new functions can be subsequently integrated. Satoshi Katahira of Subaru’s Security Systems Department said that the chips from Xilinx do a good job in processing data and implementing new functions.

JIS certification is a mandatory certification that verifies the conformity of products with Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). JIS certification covers, among others, products in the fields of mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering, automotive engineering, and information processing in accordance with the Industrial Standardization Act of Japan. The Japanese industrial standards are issued by the JISC – Japanese Industrial Standards Committee. The JIS certification includes product testing. Depending on the type of certification, a factory audit may also be required. Are you interested in certification of products for the Japanese market? We would be happy to support you in the JIS certification process and are also available to answer your questions.
